Chapter 10

I dreamed I was in danger. Amorphous, unsubstantiated and invisible, but danger all the same. I was not alone.

With a gasp, I thrashed awake and scrambled up in my bed just as something moved in the corner of my eye. I whipped my head around and made out the shadowy figure of man who lurked just inside the door near the bathroom. The room was illuminated by thin rays of morning sunshine which penetrated through the cracks in the draperies, but I couldn’t make out the intruder’s face. He stayed just far enough in the shadows to make his features indeterminate.

“Get the fuck out of here!” I screamed and launched myself for my phone, which was on the desk next to the stale pizza box.

The shadowy figure moved faster, intercepted me and we went down in a tangle of sheets onto the bed.

When I tried to scream, he clamped a rough hand over my mouth and I drew in a deep breath. His scent went down my throat and filtered into my nasal cavities and I knew who it was a split-second before he spoke to me.

“Stanzie, don’t scream, it’s me.” He cautiously lifted his hand away.

I snarled, “What the fuck are you doing in my room, Darren? How did you get in here?”

He chuckled and made no move to let me up. His body pinned mine to the mattress and he was heavy. I couldn’t move and panic began flashing bright pinpricks of light behind my eyes.

“Have you forgotten how I contribute my share to the pack funds?”

The panic made it hard to think, but a few seconds later the answer filtered into my brain.

Darren was a master at breaking and entering. He’d always fancied himself a modern-day lupine Robin Hood who stole from the rich to give to the pack. I suppose getting into my motel room had been child’s play to him.

When I’d worked for the real estate agency, he’d frequently stopped by to “borrow” keys to certain properties. He’d never actually steal from them while they were under contract, but he’d always told me I’d be surprised at the number of new home owners who didn’t bother to change the locks after they’d bought a house. And guess who had copies of the keys?

Anger began to burn through the panic.

“I thought Paul had talked you out of your life of crime,” I spat and he chuckled again.

“Paul has decided that what he doesn’t specifically know can’t specifically bother him. So the topic never comes up between us, Stanzie.”

“Well, I don’t appreciate this. Let me up.”

He shifted his body so I was even more trapped. One of his knees nudged between my thighs and I froze. His face lowered until it was three inches from mine, and he could stare into my eyes.

“What’s the rush?” He brushed hair from my cheek and let his fingers linger on my skin.

I gulped back a scream and tried to think because it was hard to believe this was happening. I had to still be dreaming.
